Criminal Obsessions

Chapter 73

Beckett

D oes she know that I’ve been following her for the last three blocks? Or that I’m watching her right now? Is she paying attention to her surroundings at all?

I slip to my knees beneath a street light, pretending to tie my shoe when she looks back. I catch her pale skin glistening beneath the streetlights.

Dark curls wrap around her face, blowing in the breeze. She reminds me of Snow White.

She stands beside the bus stop with three others. She doesn't make any conversation, just puts distance between herself and them. Is she afraid? I can make her feel safe. I can take away her fear.

I stand up and approach the bus stop. Her eyes do not rise to meet mine, she simply focuses on the darkness in the distance. I stand on the other end of the group from her, careful to keep my distance. In my coat pocket, I finger the handle of my blade. If any of these people try anything, I will kill them. For her. Whatever it takes. I have only seen her face, but I will die for her.

However, no one so much as looks at her before the bus arrives a few minutes later. A sleepy, older woman ushers us all on board, starting with me. I make my way to the back and find a seat. In the harsh light of the bus, her features are illuminated. Grim line on her lips pulled tight. Fingers entwined with a set of keys, hardly optimal protection against an attacker.

Light jacket pulled tight over her frame straining to cover a voluptuous chest. I think I'm in love. What is your name, sweet angel?

The bus driver must know her, because she takes a seat a few feet away and asks Mavis how she's doing.

Mavis closes the doors on the bus and yawns. "Living the dream, baby girl. Only another hour before closing time. How was work?"

I listen intently as my angel talks about the library. From what she says, I gather she's a lower level employee there. She’s not a head librarian, but she doesn’t mop the floors, either. My heart aches to save her from the life she's living. She must not have much money if she can't afford a car. I could give her money. I could give her the world.

The bus approaches stop after stop with few people getting off and even fewer getting on. It's nearly ten p.m. Why would anyone be riding the bus at

this hour? Excluding my angel in the front, who keeps Mavis awake long enough to reach her stop.

"Have a good night, Thea. See ya tomorrow.” Mavis asks.

I carve her name into my brain. Like her face, it will be there forever, taking up residence.

After Thea gets up and leaves, I follow suit, moving at a leisurely pace.

"Take care, ma'am," I say to Mavis on my way out. The key to going unnoticed is not to look suspicious. Mavis must know the regulars on her route and I'm not one of them.
